That's exactly the question we posed to industry pioneer Ken Robertson. He spent 18 years at Paddy Power, creating several iconic (and controversial) campaigns involving Nicklas Bendner's boxer, Oscar Pistorius' legs, and Stephen Hawking's computer.
TV ads still play the biggest role in gambling ad spending in the UK and US in 2024. Do you see betting ads moving to mobile and social media, as we've seen in many other industries?
"Yes, I think the mix or distribution of spending in marketing channels has come a long way. I'm not exactly sure what the numbers look like now, but historically I think 50% of the spending would have been on TV and the rest would have been distributed on the BBC, social channels, etc. The mix might not be a million miles away from now, but I can't say it's increasing with TV. TV still has a role to play, and distribution may change, but I don't think the environment has changed completely yet."
In fact, it's true that TV is still at the top of advertising spending, and by a considerable margin.
It's easy to see why sports betting advertising has built a TV-dominated business model over the past three decades, when it's the main place where people go to watch sports. But like many industries in modern times, the environment is changing. Even though it exists within a rapidly evolving mechanism: speculative industries, the demand for creativity remains constant.
You have now established Agency the Tentman. In your opinion, how does your advertisement stand out and how do you think it can be applied to social media in the modern technological age?
"It's about taking the idea of a reverse branch, that is, choosing a path that has traveled somewhat less. So when a brief description comes in, we always divide the summary. We tend to go back to our clients, and interrogate the description thoroughly and provocatively just to apply a slightly different perspective. As an agency, we always approach things from a slightly nontraditional perspective.
